Programs

The Western Day Care Centres are divided into four programs; Infants, Toddlers, Preschool and Kindergarten. Western Day Care meets all of the requirements of the Day Nurseries Act. The programs are managed by two full-time Directors – one at each centre - whose responsibility is to ensure consistent quality care for each individual child. The supervisors act as a resource liaison between parents, children, staff, the centre and the broader community.

The programs are designed to provide quality care and education to the children, to meet the needs of each individual child and to challenge them at their development level. In order to provide experiences that do this, several centres of activity are set up; namely dramatic play, family living, creative, music, library, blocks, manipulative toys as well as indoor and outdoor active play centres. Through the interaction of the child, the environment, the other children, and the adults in the Centres, the child develops physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually.

Infants (0-18 months)

The combined Centres now have 20 infant spaces - 10 spaces in our Hyde Park location and 10 spaces in our south London location.  A number of our educators working with infants have received special training in Infant/Toddler care and development

Toddlers (18-30 months)

Western Day Care Centres provide space for 50 toddlers- 20 spaces in our Hyde park location and 30 spaces in our south London location.

Preschool and Kindergarten Programs (31 months - 5 years)

Our Blue Heron Drive location provides 48  spaces for preschoolers and kindergarten-age children and our Emery Street location in south London provides 80 spaces. The Kindgergarten program meets and, in several areas, exceeds provincial standards, with superior child-teacher ratios and comprehensive skill-building in language, problem-solving, mathematics, natural science, music, and art, as well as a variety of indoor and outdoor activites designed to build self-esteem, communication skills, physical and social development.

Unique Programming

Both Western Day Care Centres have incorporated Wings of DiscoveryTM, Canada’s first science-based curriculum for young children aged 3 months to 5 years. The curriculum builds on a child’s knowledge base and develops important life skills, such as problem-solving, communication, language and math, by engaging the child's innate curiosity of how the world works. Wings inspires discovery in young children, building self-esteem and pride in accomplishment.  Through the interactions of the child with the environment, other children, and the educators, the child develops physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually.
